That's right! Tomorrow is the day! Thanksgiving 2019, baby! Are you excited? Are you ready? I know I am! Crescent rolls, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, butter shaped like a turkey, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, a big ‘ol juicy Tom Turkey, and...political rants from the adults in the family? Uhhhh, maybe I’m not so ready. But the pies, oh the pies! Ok yeah, I’m ready!
You know what? I am ready for the heavy conversations this year too! Whether it’s about politics or one of your family members spills an embarrassing secret about another family member, I have figured out a foolproof way to avoid these conversations altogether. But not just how to avoid them, how to stop them. in. their. tracks.
So, when a friend or a family member brings up a contemporary controversial topic (it doesn’t even have to be controversial, you could just be tired of hearing about it), change the subject immediately to not only something that you want to talk about, but something that will confuse the other person and make them say, “What? What are you talking about? That’s totally irrelevant. Why would you bring that up?” What you just said will confuse them so much, that they’ll forget whatever they were just talking about.
And since you’re reading this blog, I know what your favorite thing to talk about is: whether Biden should beat out Bernie Sanders for the 2020 Presidential election…NOT! To be quite honest, I don’t even know if I phrased that right. No, I assume that you, like myself, like to talk about all things music. Specifically, classic rock? After all, this is a (primarily) classic rock music blog.
Now, at this point, you may be wondering how you can somehow weasel in a random music fact or topic into an otherwise boring conversation. The answer is simple. Three little words: On This Day. And BOOM! BAM! BLAM! Your “random” music fact isn’t so random anymore! When you say, “On this day, back in November 1963...” it fits in the conversation (almost) perfectly because it's topical! Haha, I’m a genius!
Ok, ok. I’ll stop tooting my own horn for a minute to give you some examples:
1. Your uncle: “Who wants to hear my opinion on that ding-dong idiot
Elizabeth Warren?”
You: “You know Uncle Ted, On This Day in 1960, the King of Rock ‘N
Roll himself, Elvis Presley started a 6-week run with his 43rd hit and
15th #1 in four years with the song “Are You Lonesome Tonight.”
Your uncle: “…”
Excellent👍🏼
2. Your aunt: “BERNIE! BERNIE! BERNIE!”
You: “Speaking of Bernie, On This Day in 1970, Santana’s classic
album Abraxas moved to the #1 position, abbreviating the four-week
stay by Led Zeppelin III.”
Your aunt: “I don’t even know what any of that means or how it's even remotely relevant. Now, what was I saying?”
You: 😏
3. Your cousin: “Hey Grandma, I’m gonna punch you in the face!”
You: “Hey, hey, hey!! On This Day in 1963, The Beatles’ hit “She Loves You” returned to #1 in the UK!”
Your Grandma, to you: “You’re my favorite!”
Ok, ok, those examples got a little crazy towards the end, but I think you get my point. Here’s a full list of what happened “On This Day” on November 28:
- 1960- Elvis Presley, started a 6-week run with his 43rd hit and 15th #1 in four years with the song “Are You Lonesome Tonight.”
- 1963- The Beatles’ “She Loves You” returned to #1 in the UK.
- 1970- Santana’s Abraxas moved to the #1 position, abbreviating a four-week stay by Led Zeppelin III.
- 1974- Elton John and John Lennon sang a duet of “I Saw Her Standing There” at Madison Square Garden in New York. This show was Lennon’s last stage appearance.
- 1979- Ringo Starr’s home in Los Angeles, CA burned down. He lost all his Beatles memorabilia.
- 1981- “Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind, and Fire was the #1 R&B song.
- 1981- Billboard listed Olivia Newton John’s “Physical” at #1, but most radio stations had “Waiting for a Girl Like You” by Foreigner at the top.
- 1987- The Dirty Dancing soundtrack was still perched at #1 on the Billboard 200. Michael Jackson’s Bad was at #2 and Bruce Springsteen’s Tunnel of Love was at #3.
All kidding aside, I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and I hope you are too. I hope you have a happy, safe, and fun day with your favorite people. Above all, keep the conversation light and the food heavy! Happy Thanksgiving!
